I am an academic. I research and write about the relationships between social class and writing. I also do a lot of work with large-scale writing assessment. I know that doesn't make me sound very interesting, but I love my work. I love researching, writing, and teaching, which is what I do for a living. I exercise regularly with a regI'me that generally includes an hour of biking every day. I road bike to stay in shape for mountain biking (really, it’s trail biking in Louisiana), which I do every weekend. I’m a serious mountain biker. I like many other outdoor activities, but mountain biking is my favorite. I also love to play music and write songs. I have two wonderful children whom I telephone just about every day and visit often, my daughter in Virginia and my son in Kansas City. I have three beautiful grandchildren, twin girls of 6 months, a boy of 5 months. I have a profession I love, many friends both in Baton Rouge and across the nation, a beautiful, old Southern kind of home, and a secure financial situation. In spite of the loss of my wife, I know my blessings. I would be a fool to think otherwise. I would like to meet someone who is open-minded, likes to encounter new ideas, likes to read and talk about what she reads. I would also like her to have what I think of as an athletic attitude toward life and herself. I would like to do things with her—and I’m always ready to learn how to play anything or go anywhere. I think I should amend my response to political leaning. There isn't a category there for me. You might call me excessively liberal, but there are several concepts associated with "liberal" that do not mark me. Let me put it this way: I think that the welfare of the community overrides, without being independent of it, individual interests. You might say that makes me politically a Christian. I am also an anti-war activist--not a pacifist, just against war as a popular strategy for making some wealthy people wealthier.
