The Goal of a Lifelong Gardener, "We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between, we garden. When the world wearies, and society ceases to satisfy, there is always a garden. ", - M. Aumonier , It is my belief that the person I am today - the things I hold dear to my heart and the things that make me tick are a direct result of the people who loved and raised me and taught me how fulfilling it can be to dirty my hands in the soil, to reap what I sow and to attain a sense of harmony with the earth. I live my life a day at a tI'me and tend my garden a row at a tI'me. And, when the sun goes down on my small, Missouri farm, I am at peace with myself. My garden is good. My life is good. To be a Master Gardener ... I can't I'magine anything that would make my parents and my grandparents any prouder. What are you doing, Chuck? I am putting all of those lessons you taught me on the farm to good use - I'm sharing my passion for gardening with others - opening up my mind to learn even more about an art and a way of life that is as significant today as it was 50 years ago when I was a skinny, toe-headed city boy who would spend summers with grandpa and grandma on the farm. Those days changed my life. Those days made me who I am. I can't help but believe that it would do the world a bit of good to get back to the basics - to spend evenings talking with their neighbors over coffee and cake - sharing big tales about their ribbon-winning fruits and vegetables and what to expect from the weather tomorrow. Turn off the televisions and videogames. The entertainment was about conversation and comradry, canned peaches and fresh rhubarb pie, a 27 1/4 pound cantelope and a bumper year in the strawberry patches. Those were the days. We ordered our seeds from the Henry Fields magazine and learned of the latest farming and gardening trends in the Successful Farmer and the Missouri Ruralist. TI'mes are tough for everyone right now and families can take matters into their own hands again. In the days, we practiced true organic farming with manure fertilizers; we grew, canned and froze our fruits and vegetables; we raised cows and pigs for our meat and kept chickens for our eggs. The sheep provided the wool, God provided the rain and we practiced a subsistence sort of existence. This respect and dedication to the soil and what it could produce meant that our table was full of good, nutritious food. It's tI'me to get back to the basics. I learned to garden when I was 7-years-old. While not heart healthy, I also drove my first tractor on my 7th birthday. When I was 8, I had heart surgery and my life changed. Summers were spent in Pleasant Hill and Gunn City, Missouri on my grandparents' farms. The memories in my mind are so alive that I can almost feel the sun on my face and feel and taste the juice from the freshly-picked tomatoes as it dripped down my chin. My best and earliest memories of growing up involve farming and gardening. It was those experiences that landed me in this Master Gardener class - almost five decades later. I remember early mornings on the farm when my grandmother would insist that I go out and pick green beans from the garden. While I didn't mind this task so much, I wanted to go fishing instead. One morning, I put a gunney sack in the bottom of the pail and picked just enough green beans to reach the pail's top. At first, my attempt to pull a fast one on grandma worked - she thought the entire pail was filled with beans. However, when I did return from fishing later, I was handed the pail and told to get back to the beans. I recall trying it again with blackberries, but it didn't work. I remember good years and bad years in the garden and how my grandparents would tend to the garden during bad tI'mes like it was a sick child needing chicken soup. This season was especially challenging because of how cool it was, but all in all, my garden did well, which pleases me a great deal. Becoming a Master Gardener provides me with opportunities to share my knowledge of gardening and farming with others. I will be able to pass on some of the lessons that I learned from my grandparents years ago. And, I will also be able to become enlightened about local and regional horiculture, which will only help me grow good gardens. What more could I ask for?, Submitted by Charles Gray

I am a very sI'mple man, don't ask for much. I don't hold things in, I'm very confident and I tell it like it is. Lets have a great tI'me getting to know each other and we'll see where it goes ... What I'm looking in a woman is for her to be confident independent and specially herself. If you are like that, then I will be a happy guy!
